![]() It affected me so deeply that I have spent the last 15 years studying yoga and practicing what I’ve learned. It’s taken me a very long time to understand what happened during that peak experience in India. I became the bird song, the lake, the sky – completely out of my body. The sensation kept getting more and more intense and then, suddenly, ‘I’ was gone. But I was a polite English boy, so I stayed. An intense sensation began to build in my forehead and I wanted to run out of the room flailing my arms and screaming. Soon the instructor led us in the practice of something I hadn’t heard of before: Yoga Nidra. ![]() I couldn’t touch my toes, and couldn’t calm my inner critic, which kept telling me I was the worst yogi in the room. I began in-depth practice of Hatha yoga, and I was terrible at it. Having experienced some moments of deep peace in India, I decided to go back there and explore the practices that had brought me the greatest sense of contentment. This brush with death made me realise I was exhausted by the relentless pursuit of whatever it was I was seeking. Then, in one exotic locale, I was held up at gun point. I travelled from place to place, always on the move, searching for something I couldn’t name. I took off to Asia for a very belated “gap year” of discovery (well, 6 years, to be exact).Īlong the way, I shed some things I no longer needed, including a significant relationship, and a sense of myself as a do-gooder (I worked for Amnesty International, whose work I still deeply respect). I chose a variety of styles across multiple price points, prioritizing seating and mattress comfort.More than 20 years ago I had a successful career in corporate account management, but was feeling lost, broken, burnt out and desperately ready for a change. I kept this firsthand experience in mind, as well as my expertise about the best materials and features out there, to compile the selection below. (Also, after moving in with my dad when I was a kid, I spent a year sleeping on an awful pull-out couch with an uncomfortable center bar). I’ve personally shopped for multiple sleeper sofas at brick-and-mortar stores and online, so I know what to look for in a sofa sleeper-and I really know what to avoid. I mostly cover shelter content here at PopMech, so I have years of experience evaluating furniture for its durability, comfort, and style. There are also pull-out couches made with a mix of solid and manufactured wood that are a step down in quality but still durable over time. Just like with a regular living room sofa, the best sleeper sofa frames are made with 100 percent kiln-dried hardwood, like poplar. Also, always remove bedding before closing the sofa to avoid damaging the mechanism (and potentially ripping your sheets). Pro tip: The average thickness of sleeper sofa mattresses is roughly five inches, so it’s best to use a mattress pad and fitted sheet specifically made for sleeper sofas. Just like with a bed mattress, you get what you pay for. There are also sleeper sofas with traditional innerspring mattresses, which tend to be less expensive-and often less comfortable-and regular foam mattresses, which we don't recommend for regular use since the foam wears out. These days, the best sleeper sofa mattresses are typically traditional memory foam, gel memory foam, or air-over-coil hybrid mattresses. Memory-foam sleeper sofas are easier to move, but they may not be as durable over time. ![]() Sleeper sofas with high-quality steel mechanisms usually cost more than simple fold-out memory foam mattresses, but they tend to be heavy. Generally speaking, there are two types of true sleeper sofas: those with a steel trifold or bifold mechanism, and those with no metal mechanism.
